“My mother, who came from Japan, was a treasure house of stories. I grew up with her folk tales, told in her distinctive, yet universal, voice. Perhaps that foundation explains why I was drawn, at an early age, to the tales and myths of Hawaii, an interest that widened in later years to include stories of other Asian cultures.”
– Shiho Nunes age 95, 2012

It was years before Shiho Nunes was able to become a writer of these stories. She worked most of her life in teaching, curriculum development, and the care of her family. It was not until these duties came to an end and she was already in her late 70’s that she picked up her pen to write about the things that fascinated her.
